This technical paper describes a practical approach to quantify energy consumption and GHG emissions in the road transport sector. It provides interested technical experts a detailed technical description for developing country-specific emission factors for road transport.
The technical paper provides a basic introduction to the Handbook for Emission Factors (HBEFA) and to the PHEM model, which is the micro-level emission simulation model underlying HBEFA. HBEFA is widely applied in Europe to calculate transport emissions. The paper further describes the in-depth approach to adapt HBEFA to the context of Chinese traffic situations and presents the detailed process of localisation conducted in this study with regard to data collection, data processing and identification of typical driving cycles for Chinese cities.
